Thailand’s Alexander Albon has been promoted from Toro Rosso to drive alongside Max Verstappen at parent team Red Bull for the rest of the Formula One season, both teams said on Monday.
The debutant Albon takes the place of Pierre Gasly for the remaining nine season races, starting with the Belgian Grand Prix on September 1, and can secure a place for the 2020 season with good results.
Gasly failed to impress at Red Bull by garnering just 63 points from 12 races – compared to the 181 from two-time season winner Verstappen – and heads back to Toro Rosso to race alongside Daniil Kvyat.
“Red Bull are in the unique position of having four talented Formula One drivers under contract who can be rotated between the team and Toro Rosso,” Red Bull said.
