THE Perseid meteor shower illuminated the Qatari sky on Monday evening, Qatar Calendar House (QCH) has said, adding the celestial spectacle will be visible until the dawn of Tuesday (August 13).
According to a QCH press release, the residents of Qatar and northern hemisphere in general, have a good chance to observe the Perseid meteor shower. Dr Beshir Marzouk, expert astronomer at QCH, said the Perseid meteor shower is usually active every year from July 23 to August 24, while this year its peak period starts from the evening of August 12 and ends with the crack of dawn on August 13.
Perseid meteor shower is one of the important meteor showers seen from the earth, where the average rate of showers flow is 60 -100 Perseid meteors per hour.
According to Dr Marzouk, residents of Qatar and the countries of northern hemisphere do not need an astronomical instrument to see Perseid meteor shower and can watch it with naked eyes from places without environmental pollution and with clear sky. They can see it from darker places by looking towards the northeast.
Dr Marzouk said residents can also take pictures of the Perseid meteor showers with the latest digital cameras. However, they must increase the exposure time of camera to get the best results, he pointed out.
Perseid meteor shower is created by debris from ‘Swift-Tuttle Comet’, where the earth passes through the dust and debris it leaves behind during the last week of July till mid-August every year.
As known, the best time for observing Perseid meteor shower is at midnight till dawn time, while the best location is a darker location without light and environmental pollution.
