Kinshasa: Thirty-six people are missing after a motorized boat capsized in Lake Kivu, leaving at three people dead, the governor of Congo’s South Kivu province said on Saturday.
The narrow canoe, known as a pirogue, was carrying 85 people when it capsized overnight to Friday in the lake that separates Congo from Rwanda. Most of the passengers were rescued - many were wearing life vests.
The boat had reportedly been overloaded with agricultural products.
According to Swedi Basila, the regional transport minister, the number of boat accidents on Lake Kivu has jumped since the beginning of 2019. (DPA)
