Al Wakrah Municipality has turned into a prime residential area in Qatar, thanks to massive urban developments such as Doha Metro station, new roads, FIFA World Cup stadium, malls, commercial complexes, international schools, hospitals having taken place in Al Wakrah, Al Mashaf and Al Wukair areas in the past few years.
According to many residents and shop operators, the growth in Wakrah in the last few years is, perhaps, more than any other areas in the country.
Al Janoub Stadium is the latest qualitative addition to Al Wakrah offering many facilities around the stadium such as cycling and running tracks, a multipurpose indoor arena, mosque, wedding hall and markets.
Visitors and fans during the World Cup will be able to spend their time in the stadium facilities before and after matches.
The recent expansion of Al Wakrah Municipality towards the western side has contributed to the setting up of a large number of international schools, retail outlets, eateries and hospitals.
“The stretch between the roundabout near Barwa Village and the recently opened Al Janoub Stadium has seen major development. Wakrah has now emerged as a fully developed city. All government and private facilities are available in the area,” Tamal Das, who moved to Al Wukair three years ago, said.
Das said availability of good schools is another reason for many residents shifting from other parts of the country to Wakrah.
“It won’t be an exaggeration if we call Wakrah the ‘school capital of Qatar’. Most of the international schools are available here. Work is also on to open more schools in this part of Qatar,” he said.
According to Ezdan Mall Lease Manager Yehia Zakaria, population explosion in Wukair’s newly-developed residential compounds has led to huge rise in demand for commercial space in the area.
“Ezdan Mall in Wakrah has achieved almost 80 percent occupancy within a very short time of its opening. We receive many inquiries for shop space. Ezdan Mall in Wukair is also gaining higher occupancy,” he said.
Fast development of Wakrah area also came to the rescue of a number of traders who used to have their businesses in Doha until the areas where they operated were demolished to make way for development.
“We shifted to Wukair almost three years ago as we got eviction notice for our shop in Msheireb area. We started doing good business from the first year itself,” a trader said.
Most shop operators attribute the growth of their businesses to the arrival of new residential compounds in Wukair.
“There is a continuous growth in our regular clientele as many people are now shifting from Doha to Warkrah area,” a shop owner dealing in garments at Wukair said.
