‘SCREEN For Life’, Qatar’s national breast and bowel cancer screening programme operated by the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), is taking its early screening campaign ‘Put Yourself First’ into malls and public and private sector venues throughout the country as part of the October Breast Cancer Awareness Drive.
‘Screen For Life’s month-long campaign is aimed at educating the public about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and to promote early screening with a free mammogram test being offered to all women in Qatar aged 45-69 years.
‘Put Yourself First’ awareness booths will be set up at Villagio, Landmark and Mirqab malls to raise awareness and give an opportunity to ladies to register for the mammogram test at the screening suites and promote early screening for breast cancer among shoppers and mall visitors.
Awareness lectures will be staged at Seimens, Carnegie Mellon University, Al Khor Community, Al Rayyan Health Center, Le Mirage Real Estate, Deloitte, Boecker, Elite Medical Center, Centa Hotel, St Regis hotel, Syrian School, Potlock, Muntajat, Ihsan School, Nexus, Deema community and Qatar Petroleum – Mesaieed.
The campaign is also supported by the US Embassy in Qatar which distributed educational material, the ‘pink ribbon’ breast cancer awareness badge and bracelets.
In addition to the lectures, a panel discussion on breast cancer screening will be held at the Olympics Committee in cooperation with Qatar Women’s’ Sports Committee.
Cancer survivors will also attend the discussion and share their stories.
“This year our awareness efforts have struck a resonating chord with public and private sector organisations who are supporting our efforts”, said Dr Shaikha Abu Shaikha, manager of Screening Programs at the PHCC. “While we are encouraged by the support, our outreach efforts need to continue not just in the special Breast Cancer Awareness Month but much beyond.”
“Our tagline ‘Put Yourself First’ is a direct call to women to take advantage of the free mammogram opportunity and take a proactive approach to their health”, she pointed out.
The ‘Screen For Life’ mobile screening unit will visit over20 public and private sector sites offering free mammogram tests to women throughout Qatar. The tour stops will be at Al Khor Qatar Gas Community, Al Jaida Square, Le Mirage Village, Aster hospital, Al Khor Hospital, Qatar Airways, Qatar Women’s Sports Committee, Mall of Qatar, Hamad Medical Corporation Conference in Katara, Doha College- Al Waab, Elite Medical Center, Diva Lounge, Desert Princess, Al- Hayat Medical Center, Deema – Al Kheesa Community, Qatar Petroleum Dukhan, Qatar Petroleum Mesaieed, Aspire Ladies Club, Aspire 8th Torch Staircase Run organised by Aspire and Weil Cornell University.
“I would urge all women who may find it difficult to get to one of our permanent screening suites at Al Wakra, Leabaib and Rawdat Al Khail Health Centers to take advantage of these mobile unit stops. They should feel confident in the unit as it provides a comparative service to our screening suites being staffed by highly qualified medical professionals and offering both comfort and privacy”, added Dr Abu Shaikha.
