Paris: The official body representing Islam in France on Wednesday denounced what it said were “hysterical reactions” to the veil worn by some observant Muslim women. “Extreme right-wing rhetoric against the Muslims of France has been become outrageously commonplace, relayed by indulgent media and racists from all sides,” the French Council of the Muslim Religion (CFCM) said.
The longstanding controversy in France over the hijab, or Islamic veil, broke out again on Friday after a far-right regional lawmaker asked for a mother in a headscarf, who was helping escort a school trip, to be thrown out of the regional assembly they were visiting. Under French laws enforcing secularism, public officials including teachers as well as schoolchildren are forbidden from wearing religiously distinctive clothing. But the rule does not apply to parents who help out by accompanying school trips. (dpa)
