Qatar has been elected as a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Standing Committee on Peace and International Security, at the 141st General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) being held in Belgrade.
Qatar will be represented in the committee by Member of the Advisory (Shura) Council HE Mohammed bin Mahdi al Ahbabi.
The committee will follow up on the 2014 resolution titled ‘Towards a nuclear-weapon-free world: The contribution of parliaments’. It will also discuss topics related to the criminalisation of money laundering, as well as conduct an expert hearing on parliamentary strategies to promote peace and security to address threats and conflicts arising from climate-related disasters.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the Shura Council HE Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al Mahmoud met with Speaker of the National Assembly of Serbia and President of 141st General Assembly on the sidelines of the IPU General Assembly in Belgrade on Wednesday. During the meeting, they reviewed the parliamentary relations between the two countries and discussed topics on the agenda of the General Assembly. The meeting was attended by a number of Shura members and Ambassador of Qatar to Serbia HE Sheikh Mubarak bin Fahad al Thani.
Mahmoud also met separately with Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda Rebecca Kadaga, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Djibouti Mohamed Ali Houmed and Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana Aaron Oquaye. The meetings reviewed the parliamentary relations between Qatar and the three countries, and the topics on the agenda of the IPU General Assembly. The meetings were attended by a number of Shura members.
