MERCURY, the nearest planet to the Sun, will reach its highest point over the western horizon of Qatar on Saturday (October 19) evening, where it will be at the greatest elongation with the Sun,
Qatar Calendar House
(QCH) announced on Wednesday.
Mercury will be at farthest angular distance (24.6 degrees) from the Sun as observed from Earth during the greatest elongation period.
QCH’s expert astronomer Dr Beshir Marzouk described it as an important cosmic phenomenon as it’s the best time for residents of Qatar and other Arab countries to watch and observe Mercury over the western horizon.
He, however, added that it is difficult to observe or watch Mercury for a long time after sunset because Mercury’s orbit is very close to the Sun.
The greatest elongation time will be followed by decrease in the angular distance between Mercury and the Sun every day.
Qatar residents can watch the spectacle for an hour and 10 minutes from Sunset time(5:04pm)from places without light and environment pollutions, Dr Marzouk further pointed out.
