THE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs HE Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al Attiyah on Wednesday lamented the absence of accountability and punishment for countries spreading fake news.
In a discussion moderated by Steve Clemons, editor-at-large, the Hill, on the second day of the Global Security Forum, Attiyah said that the conflict in this region started with fake information, adding that spreading falsehood is an important tool in the new generation of “hybrid wars”.
When asked about the best response to this kind of misleading information, he said, “Educating our people and working to convey our side of the story supported by solid facts along with continuing to confront attempts to falsify information by presenting the justness of our cause are the only solutions.”
“The challenging part is educating the people, because the people are the representatives of the country,” he added.
Elaborating on ‘hybrid wars’, Attiyah said that “these wars would be fought at different levels, including social and economic, with different ammunitions of which military equipment would be one part.”
Mentioning Qatar’s important role in finding amicable solutions to complex regional and international issues, he said: “Qatar realises that interests and principles are two major elements for reconciliation between opponents, and therefore, issues should be approached accordingly. It is one of the reasons, why Qatar succeeds in its mediation efforts.”
He said Qatar has proven to be an “honest broker having no hidden agendas as some might claim. That is the reason behind Qatar’s success in solving global disputes.”
The minister said that Qatar today has reached a level where interfering or meddling with the State’s internal affairs is unimaginable. “Qatar, after 2017, is a different country. I don’t have any worries concerning the World Cup,” he said.
