MORE than 100 leading universities and education providers from over 15 countries, including the top institutions in Qatar, India and the UK, welcomed students from across the country at the opening of the University Expo 2019 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre on Wednesday.
The opening of the two-day expo was graced by the Undersecretary for Higher Education Affairs at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Dr Khalid al Ali and Qatar Chamber First Vice Chairman Mohamed bin Towar al Kuwari. Also present were Informa Tharawat Commercial Director Alan Kelly and Community College of Qatar Vice President Dr Khalid Shams alAbdulqader.
The exhibition is organised by Informa Tharaway with Qatar Chamber as strategic partner, Akhlaquna as silver exhibitor and The Great India Education Fair as Indian partner. It caters to students aged 16+, as well as their parents; school counsellors; principals and career advisors.
The exhibition features pavilions headlined by the Indian Pavilion which showcases over 20 universities including India’s top institutions. The British Pavilion features over eight universities while the North Cyprus Pavilion is showcasing six of its leading universities.
Besides, a Lebanese Pavilion is also being showcased. Other countries represented include France, UK, Malaysia, Italy, Netherlands, Oman, Turkey and the US.
“This event brings together leading universities from Qatar and around the world. It is an opportunity for students to know about study opportunities and the fields they may pursue in the country and abroad. We also feature seminars that help students learn about the opportunities as well as challenges of studying in countries like the UK”, Informa Tharawat Commercial Director Alan Kelly told Qatar Tribune in an interview.
The expo includes about 20 seminars divided into morning and evening sessions offering personalised advice and detailed explanations to students concerning any queries that they may have about higher education or studying overseas.
Among the featured topics are ‘Study in Spain: Insight from Current Students’, ‘Studying in the USA: Essential Information for Students and Parents’, ‘Study in India: Essential Information on Applications Process’ and ‘Study in France: Essential Information on Applications Process’.
“This is a very good opportunity for us because the main objective is to promote the education system of Malaysia and many people are considering our country as their destination to study since we are in the list of the world rankings”, said AD Akmal bin Mohamed Ali, vice consul in Education of Education, Malaysia.
Similarly, Owais Mohamed Aslam Kazi, marketing manager of Education Malaysia for Middle East, South and Central Asia, said, “We are not just looking at the Qatari market here, but the expat market as well. We have seen the number of expats from this region coming to Malaysia grow. We have close to a hundred Qatari students in Malaysia pursuing their Master’s degree and PhD. So far only six Malaysian universities are recognised by Qatar, but we are in the process of bringing all our 87 licensed universities here to attract both local and expat students.”
From the Indian Pavilion, Vishwakarma University CEO Bipin Sule said, “As a 34 year-old institution we already have accreditation of the government of India. We will definitely try to complete the procedures in Qatar so we can also invite Qatari students to enrol with us. We offer almost 69 courses.”
Manipal Global Education Services Assistant Manager for Marketing Archana R Nayak said, “We have a long-standing relations with the Indian diaspora in Doha and we value that relationship immensely. A lot of schools here like Birla Public School have shown their trust in Manipal by sending many students over the years.”
The Qatar-based universities in the expo are Community College Qatar, Doha Institute of Graduate Studies, College of North Atlantic, Qatar Foundation, Education City Qatar, Northwestern University in Qatar, HEC Paris in Qatar, Carnegie Mellon University Qatarand Qatar University.
