London: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson drew an angry response from Irish republican party Sinn Fein on Monday after he promised to protect British soldiers on military operations from prosecution under civilian laws.
Ahead of a general election on December 12, Johnson’s Conservatives pledged to introduce legislation to ensure that “laws which are intended to govern peacetime affairs are not applied to service personnel on military operations.” A new Conservative government will also “protect former soldiers from vexatious claims” as part of a package of measures to benefit military veterans. “It’s so important that we continue to support our veterans and thank them for all they’ve done for us,” Johnson tweeted on Monday.
Sinn Fein and other campaigners are still pushing for the prosecution of British soldiers involved in the death of civilians during decades of sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland. (DPA)
